It is already a reality . Today the official version of the new ISO 45001 was published. With this standard, it is hoped to reduce work-related accidents and illnesses worldwide, by proactively anticipating the possible occurrence of events and preventing work-related damage or injuries.
After many adjustments and consultations , the new standard is integrated with the already published ISO 9001 for quality and ISO 14001 for the environment. The aim is to create solid and effective processes that will allow organizations, of any size and sector, to implement a safe working environment.
The new features that ISO 45001 brings with respect to its line data predecessor, OHSAS 18001 , in terms of occupational health and safety, are perfectly aligned with the current vision that is intended to be had when implementing and certifying a management system in an organization.
Its main feature is that it stands out as the first standard that will provide, with its high-level structure , a comprehensive, integral framework for management systems that address occupational health and safety issues.
Organizations will be able to have a single management system that includes aspects of quality , environment and health and safety , thus facilitating the management of their processes, definition and implementation of their associated practices.
This new regulatory structure aims to promote compatibility between the different management system standards, to facilitate their integration and implementation. ISO has sought to be more understandable and to ensure that its standards can be applied to all organizations of all sizes and sectors . The new standard also shows great versatility when it comes to being applied internationally , due to its easy adaptation and application in any country and culture .
Taking into account the context of the organization and its environment is becoming one of the aspects that is gaining more strength among the new features associated with ISO standards . It is clear that the risks and impacts associated with an organization's activity cannot be treated in isolation. The place where my activity takes place, the possible impacts it generates, as well as the existing case studies or the expectations of the interested parties, are elements that must be considered and included in my processes as an integral part of my management system.
With ISO 45001 , workers become a key and very active part of the occupational health and safety management system. The new standard highlights the role of consultation , leadership and employee participation in the different stages associated with the system of this standard.
Workers, visitors and external staff must be aware of the risks associated with their activities at all times and at the same time be more competent to identify them. They must be aware of the hazards in their workplaces and at the same time have the appropriate training to be able to identify them. Just as the role of workers is increased, the leadership and commitment of management is also increased with respect to the requirements already in place in OHSAS 18001 .
A new risk-based approach, understood in the context of identifying new opportunities, is emerging in this new ISO 45001 standard , which aims to be the key for any organization, regardless of its size, to improve its results and performance in terms of health and safety . The aim is to offer safe and healthy work spaces to its employees.
