What do workers want?
This is of course a question you’ve probably asked yourself before. What exactly are your potential and current employees looking for? Well, there are a few things to consider.

PWC's 2022 Global Workforce Hopes and Fears Survey found there were five main reasons why workers were looking for a new job: they wanted more rewarding work, a workplace where they could be themselves, be paid fairly, have a team that cares about them, and have a manager who listens to them.

Your goal as a manager, director or owner facing a labor shortage is to make sure you’re providing these things. We’ll get into how to do that later. But for now, just know that these are the kinds of things your potential employees expect in any job opportunity.

Improve your company culture
Two figures represent employee performance.

OK, let’s start at the beginning. What exactly is “company culture”? Why is it important? And how can you improve it? Simply put, “company culture” refers to the shared values, attitudes, and behaviors that drive how a company operates. Company culture influences how a company does business. This includes processes, policies, employee attitudes and behaviors, and more.

If you want to overcome a labor shortage, you’ll need to offer a great company culture, with authentic values that give your employees a voice. People want to work for companies where they feel appreciated, where their work matters, and where they’re treated with kindness and respect. If you can’t provide that, your employees will likely leave to work for a company that can.

Don’t believe us? In 2019, Glassdoor surveyed over 5,000 workers in the US, UK, France, and Germany about their workplace culture. The survey found:

71% of respondents would look for a job elsewhere if the current corporate culture deteriorated.
56% said company culture was more important than salary when it came to job satisfaction.
