The transition from CV to competency-based interviewOn the occasion of the interview cycle ¡Yo me empleo! on our Educational TV, the professor of the International MBA Master in Business Administration and Management at Bureau Veritas Centro Universitario, Alberto Cuervo, and the career counselor and specialist in Human Resources, Sandra Chacón, talk to us in this post about the competency-based interview.
An interesting study carried out by ManpowerGroup for the Human Age Institute reveals that there are certain skills that stand out in the selection processes of companies, such as leadership capacity , teamwork , or results orientation .
Indeed, these are skills that every team leader would need to bc data have in their company or work group, but the question we must ask ourselves is the following:
Do we know how to look for the skills we need in our selection processes?
Recruiting staff does not mean choosing the best, but rather selecting the person whose profile best fits the current and future needs of the job .
What should we know when carrying out a selection process?
Firstly, the characteristics of the position to be filled and the appropriate profile to perform that job.
A CV is a basic document in the job search process, where we can learn about the educational and professional history of candidates.
It should contain the maximum amount of information in the minimum amount of space, and that information should be accurate, precise, and easy to read, but we need to complete the CV with other tools that allow us to make a selection that is appropriate to the company's needs.
In our selection processes, we encounter people who apply for a job, and at the end of the interview, the interviewer is unable to obtain information about the candidate's past and future behavior in certain work situations.
Therefore, the real key is the interview, and currently the competency-based interview, which is an essential technique in any selection process, as it provides the necessary information and knowledge about the future employee .
Let's say, for example, that I want to analyze two of the skills indicated in the study, such as teamwork and leadership.
Teamwork represents the ability to collaborate effectively with others in achieving common goals, and leadership would be the ability to adequately motivate and direct collaborators to achieve the objectives assigned to their work team.
These are two very important and directly related skills, key for any business organization, where individual talent is very important, but on its own it never gives results .
A simple example can be clearly seen in sports teams. The talent and ability of the team members reach their maximum potential thanks to collaboration between them.
The star of a basketball team can score many baskets, but if he does not have teammates who give him good passes, or who defensively prevent the opposing team from making baskets, the effort will be in vain. In this case, the common goal, which is to win the game, cannot be achieved.
Competence analysis: An example of business fiction or reality
In my work as a teacher and Human Resources manager, I like to pose hypothetical situations to analyze the candidate's reaction when resolving certain situations.
To analyze the two skills described above, such as teamwork and leadership , there is a movie that I really like: The Flight of the Phoenix, where you can see the fight for a cause or objective of a group of ten survivors in the Gobi Desert, who must rebuild a crashed plane to escape from a threat that is stalking them.
In this case, during the flight, a sandstorm has destroyed the left engine and the cargo plane pilot Frank Towns, played by Dennis Quaid, must make an emergency landing in the middle of the desert, and from that moment on begins an adventure in which everyone depends on each other to save themselves; this is the common objective of this teamwork .
Often, the people who make up a work team do not believe in the result of the task or tasks assigned, that common objective , and we as recruiters must take this into account in the selection processes.
