Favicon (orig. " favicon") is an abbreviation of two words " favorite" and " icon", which literally translate as "favorite icon".
Initially, the favicon was displayed online as a mini-image of a website when it was added to the Favorites tab. This small image first appeared in March 1999, together with the release of the fifth version of Internet Explorer, the most popular browser at that time.
