1970-1993: Dominique designed and executed Sephora's “assisted self-service” sales experience. The concept separated the platform from cosmetic retail models by encouraging consumers to test products before purchasing. Dominique began his entrepreneurial journey as a sculptor and painter.
Before launching a perfumery, he sold soap in his parents' shop. In 1976, Boots partnered with Nouvelles Galeries to create the Sephora perfume chain. The company would later become part of Boots PLC in 1979. Sephora grew rapidly, making Boots the largest perfume specialist in the highly saturated French market.
Sephora's first profit was only $43,441.67 on $96,537,052.61 in revenue in 1992, after many years physician data of losses. While developing the Shop 8 format and the "assisted self-service" technology, Dominique devised ways to launch a chain of stores. By 1984, he had launched four "Shop 8" stores.
In the same year, Promodes, a fast-growing distribution group, acquired Sephora, which was undergoing a large-scale expansion phase. However, the relationship between Shop 8 and Promodes deteriorated as the latter focused on expanding its primary activities in the food industry internationally.
Promodes still held the perfume business through convertible debt. In 1988, Shop 8 acquired eight perfume stores in Paris. 1993 was a big year for Sephora. While searching for an acquisition target, the company came across Britain's Boots PLC.
