Analysis of the Passage in Acts Regarding "Dissent" on Circumcision
A commonly used Biblical passage to "prove that dissent is good" is the passage in the Acts of the Apostles regarding circumcision. The background of this passage is that some converted Jewish Catholics demanded that the converted Gentile (non-Jewish) Catholics be circumcised according to the Jewish Law. Recall that God spoke to Abraham the Prophet long ago in Old Testament times the Jewish covenant was to have all males circumcised (Genesis 17:10-12).
The Acts of the Apostles passage is as follows: (NOTE: the Douay Rheims online Bible is used)
Such disobedient, subversive dissenters must be exposed and reproved.
