2014 10 May 24 Avondale V Vikings Anthony AmoneAvondale Wombats cruised to a 41 – 10 victory over Vikings on Saturday to retain their unbeaten lead in the IDRU Builders Club Premiership race. Despite controlling possession for long periods, Vikings lacked the penetration to breach the Wombat defense until the dying seconds of the match, when big Lock Chris Isles barged over. Avondale never really got out of second gear as they put their size and weight advantage to good use in their five tries to one victory.
Man of the Match Lock Matthew Taufa was first to score after five minutes when he bumped off several defenders in a strong run to score under the posts. Vikings halfback Beauden McEwan, in attempting to stop Taufa on the line, suffered a dislocated kneecap. The match was delayed for thirteen minutes as medical staff treated the painful injury and McEwan was eventually stretchered off the field. After the delay, Darryl Sanft converted the try for Avondale to lead 7 – 0.
Replacement Halfback Steven Sunderland kicked a penalty goal to get Vikings on the board three minutes after the stoppage which was replied to by a Darryl Sanft penalty goal for Avondale to lead 10 – 3 at the ten minute mark. After a long period stuck in their own half, Avondale took advantage of a rare visit to the Vikings quarter. After a frantic series of charges at the Vikings line were repelled by the Blueys defense, the ball was spread along the Wombat backline and front rower Anthony Amone found himself in the centers to finish off with a nice try beside the posts. The conversion from Sanft brought up the halftime score of 17 – 3.
Enjoying a nine to five first half penalty count in their favor phone number library Vikings showed plenty of skill as they maintained possession for long periods of the half and kept play in Avondale territory, but didn’t have the finishing power to take full advantage of their hard work. The Blueys were forced to play ten minutes at the back end of the half with fourteen as front rower Junior Tupuola was binned for hands in the ruck.
The second half was all Avondale as they ran in three tries as Vikings struggled to match their opponent’s size and power. Three minutes into the second half, left winger Viiga Lalotoa cleaned up after some scrappy play from the Wombats to score out wide. Sanft converted the try and added a penalty goal for Avondale to lead 27 – 3 at the sixty minute mark.
Then Sanft put on one of his trademark power runs to skittle several would be tacklers in a thirty meter play to score and convert for a 34 – 3 score line. The final Wombat try came from a deft kick from Fullback Scott Morgan which found winger Lalotoa in space on the left, but when the Vikings cover arrived the wingman found replacement front rower Paul Tausala in support on the inside for the big fella to score. Sanfts conversion brought up 41 points for Avondale.
With minutes remaining Wombats were reduced to fourteen when Joe Kaio was binned for a ruck infringement. The late try for Vikings by Chris Isles was converted by Jason Reid to bring up the final score.
Avondales Matt Taufa earned the points for the Man of the Match with Darryl Sanft and Scott Morgan strong for the competition leaders. The tireless Simon Watts stood out for Vikings, with forwards Chris Isles and Josh Heggie having strong games for the Blues.
