Viking supporters, for whom these reports are written, will be generally pleased to learn that last weekend’s results have led to three of their teams playing themselves into next week’s Finals at Shamrocks’ Ocean Park next Saturday (Sept. 14).
The Colts did so last Saturday at Kiama by losing to Shamrocks and the Seconds and Thirds did so by defeating Shoalhaven and Camden respectively at Vikings on Sunday. Vikings three lower grades will now be intent on earning the right to contest the Grand Finals at WIN Stadium on Saturday September 21. Viking supporters can help them by turning up at Ocean Park on Saturday and cheering them on.
The situation for Vikings is as follows. At next Saturday’s games, Colts phone number list beat Engadine to play Shamrocks in the Grand Final. Thirds must beat Avondale to play Tech-Tahs in the Grand Final and Seconds must beat Camden to play Avondale in the Grand Final. In First Grade Vikings were eliminated by University who went on to beat Shamrocks and now have to play Avondale for the chance to have a crack at Camden in the Grand Final. It’s the pointy end of the Season.
In last weekend’s matches Vikings Colts loss to Shamrocks was clear cut, the Bluey going down by 34 points to 10. Shamrocks Colts are undefeated this season. They are a good attacking side but their main strength, as is the case with most good sides, is in their defence. Vikings began the game well, putting together a dozen phases in the Shamrocks’ quarter, without being able to put a dent in their armour. When their turn to attack came however, Shamrocks had little trouble in making inroads, scoring four converted tries and 2 penalty goals for their 34 well-earned points. Vikings now have to beat a physical Engadine side to have a final tilt at Shamrocks on September 21l.
The Third Grade Elimination Minor Semi-final on Sunday at Vikings resulted in a comfortable win to Vikings over Camden by 30 points to 8. Vikings have the typical blend of youth and experience found in most Third Grade sides in the IDRU Competition. It’s good to see the First Grade coach Shannon Fraser at 10 and Assistant Coach Mark Foster at 8, both playing in the Third Grade team. This is an excellent coaching medium for demonstrating to younger Vikings the basics of the great game of Rugby.
